Grief is exhausting, complex and
confusing, an ever-changing process that takes place over time. Yet none
of us are prepared for its impact on our lives. Instead we pretend that
death does not exist and that grief will never touch us.
'Life after Grief' is suitable for all levels of
astrology.
The author draws on solid astrological knowledge to demonstrate her points,
as well as including the mythology of the Centaurs as another lens with

| "I
felt a deep sense of gratitude to Darrelyn Gunzburg for sharing the insights
that have emerged as a result of her long and detailed study, which has
involved many years of working directly with people who are passing through
various stages of the 'black depths'.... Although already an accomplished author in other fields, this is the first astrological title that Darrelyn Gunzburg has produced. I was surprised by that, in light of the masterful way she wound through her subject matter and the sensitivity by which she made contact with the pertinent issues. I am sure it won't be the last and look forward to seeing more of her work appearing in print." |

"This is a
complex and serious book about the astrology of grief, drawing on many of
Darrelyn's case notes. The book describes grief in
all its forms, from describing the physical processes that our bodies
undergo when we are grieving to some of the myths connected with grief,
with particular emphasis on Chiron, Pholus and Nessus (there is a simple
ephemeris for all three asteroids at the back of the book.) But the heart of
the book consists of people's stories of their losses, all of which are
accompanied by clear descriptions of what was happening in their charts at
the time. This is a very helpful device in which Darrelyn covers everything
from the activities of their progressed Moon and the Fidaria phase they are
in to their transits. She also explains the relevant placing in their natal
charts. |

"Life After Grief is deep. It's powerful, emotional and healing. The astrology is developed slowly, so that it's suitable for all levels, from beginners to advanced practitioners. The cover only briefly mentions the Centaurs, but for aspiring astrologers and students, this may be the most valuable section." |

"Darrelyn Gunzburg's first astrology book is a lyrically written consideration of the subject of grief. The author has worked with clients on this most sensitive subject for 18 years; her book is designed for astrologers to help their clients to understand and work through the process of grief. While reading the book, I often became quite touched and found myself reflecting on my own life. ... One of Gunzburg's broad themes is that, if astrologers understand grief, we can help our clients at any age to deal with loss. The intricate astrology is clearly described - as the author demonstrates the primary astrological tools she uses to track the process of grief throughout a life... Darrelyn Gunzburg's other career as a playwright is reflected in her poetic writing. The many literary quotes and references and her vibrant telling of myths throughout add an artistic dimensions and make the book as much a work of literature as a text on grief. This is not only an eloquent discourse on that most human experience of grief. It also suggests how astrology can play an active role in helping others to move through time "when there is in fire in the grate and the pilot light is out." |

Grief is an almost inevitable part of life, so it's not uncommon to be faced with a grieving client. What can you do for them? Gunzburg's book "Life After Grief: An Astrological Guide to Dealing with Loss, offers both an astrological view of the grieving process and some guidance on what we, as astrologers, can offer the client who has experienced a death or other major loss. While the main thrust of this book is a discussion of grief as it relates to death, much of the material can be applied to clients who have suffered other traumatic losses or endings. There is a very good discussion of cultural attitudes to grief, including ample material on what not to say and do. This is followed by a chapter on typical responses to grief—fight, flight, or freeze—along with some astrological guidelines for determining how a person is likely to handle loss, based in part on the nurturing imprint at birth as shown by the Moon. There’s also a good chapter on children and grief.
This book is illustrated with
many well-crafted case studies from the author's files. In the chapter In
The Consulting Room, Gunzburg shows you how she works with grieving
clients. she looks at a number of factors including the client's age, major
transits, Jupiter and Saturn returns, the secondary progressed Moon, the
progressed lunation phase and fidaria. Also useful are the time-line diagrams Gunzburg lays out for the case studies, which give a clear indication of where the client is at in the grief process and what might be expected in terms of processing and moving on. There is also a chapter on the centaurs - Chiron, Pholus, and Nessus - including both mythology and interpretation tips. An appendix contains an ephemeris for all three for the first day of each month from January 1900 to November 2050. While Life After Grief is described as being suitable for all levels of astrology, my feeling is that beginners would find this text overwhelming due to the emphasis on techniques not normally encountered at a beginning level. However, the psychological material is certainly valuable for all levels. For those already consulting, this book is an absolute must-have that definitely fills a void in existing literature. Highly recommended!" |
